Is Elvis Coming To The Dallas Cowboys? – Only Jerry Knows!
Legend has it that Coach Jerry Jones was poised to pick Johnny Manziel in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft. Legend also has it that Coach Jerry was rudely prevented from picking Johnny Football when his son, Stephen, unceremoniously ripped the Draft card from his hand before it’s official information could be legitimately delivered to proper Draft personnel.
Of course, this legend gained credibility from a reputable source before that same source revealed the rather dubious nature of the story.
Not to be outperformed on the stage of incredible story lines, Jerry, also known as King of Legend in his own insulated World, created another scenario to explain the absence of Johnny Football from the Cowboys draft party. Surprisingly, this impromptu theatrical production uses a pair of reasons to offer the gullible public to explain passing on the popular star from Texas A&M and former Heisman Trophy winner.
Simply put, Coach Jones, as any legitimate coach should be counted on, was putting the interests of his players and team first. He so dutifully informed us that Tony Romo was being protected from the “explosion” of controversy that would erupt with the entrance of a highly popular and talented Quarterback into the Cowboys QB rotation.
Be it far from me to doubt the veracity of Coach Jones’ protection of the sensitivities of Tony Romo, but he also adds another interesting reason for passing on Manziel. Bringing Manziel to Dallas would have been inserting a celebrity into the sensitive mixture of the Cowboys. Speaking of Manziel, Jerry says that Johnny is “…..a celebrity. Johnny is Elvis Presley.”
There you have it, a look into the soul of Coach Jerry. Couched in his concern for Tony Romo is the real reason Manziel was not drafted by the Cowboys. As has been proven in the matter of Jimmy Johnson, Coach Jerry cannot abide anyone garnering more of anything than he does, be it attention, power, credit, etc. If anyone can be said to outshine Coach Jones, Elvis, even dead all these years, surely can be. So, the simple becomes obvious. Manziel was not welcome at that time in what would have erupted into an eclipse of Jerry.
But what about a tarnished Elvis? An Elvis trying to find himself, in the midst of resurrecting a buried career, a career that never really got on track, in spite of all the attention that came his way?
Ahhhhhh, that’s a different matter when Coach Jones is in control. When Coach Jones is performing the service of offering a helping hand, offering to lift someone stuck in the mire of life and place them on the stability of Jerry’s Professional Rock. Yes, that is completely believable and do-able for one Coach Jones.
Such is the latest rumor making the NFL rounds. Manziel to Dallas on a 1-year deal to back up Romo. Of course, Manziel would have to serve a 4 game suspension handed down by the League earlier this year.
But that’s OK. It gives Johnny a chance to developed some rapport with the other suspended players on the team that will be serving their own suspensions at the same time.
After all, Coach Jerry’s a big believer in camaraderie and team chemistry. It’s always good to have the players on the same page! Especially the right kind of players!
But for now, Coach Jones is happy again!
He’s the center of attention.
Training Camp now has relevance that was lacking.
All is well in Jerry’s World.
And only time will tell about Elvis!
