Randy Galloway: Getting Fired By Jerry Jones Was Stroke Of Good Luck For Tom Landry
Tom Landry walked away from professional football forever a martyr after being unceremoniously fired by Jerry Jones in February of 1989. But, as Randy Galloway told us in his column for the Dallas Morning News a day later, Landry was likely blessed far more than anyone realized.
Wrote Galloway: “Great. Just what they need at Valley Ranch these troubled days. An owner who is an instant NFL genius.
“An old NFL hand like Tex Schramm turns out to be the unfortunate one. He stays on as team president. Or something.
“But Tom Landry, that lucky old devil, should be rejoicing like he just won a third Super Bowl. Tom got fired.
“Believe me, Landry wouldn’t have lasted five minutes under the Jerry Jones regime. I give Schramm 10 minutes, tops.”
