The Enigma That Is The 2014 Version of Jerry Jones’ Dallas Cowboys
With OTA’s providing the last real opportunity to see and evaluate Dallas Cowboys players till training camp next month, thoughts, idea, prognostications, reviews, suggestions, conclusions, predictions and never ending chatter continue to originate from every source imaginable. Until a meaningful game is played in September, these musings have the distinction of standing on level ground. They carry equal weight as mere guesses, educated or not. While some opinions can easily wear the tag of ridiculous or thoughtless, they nevertheless cannot be considered so until reality provides its stamp of approval.
Till the real world takes effect, we are left to patiently gaze upon this group that Jerry Jones has assembled and humbly admit that we have no clue what this team is likely to accomplish on the gridiron. They have the ability to have a successful season and make it to the playoffs. They also have the ability to succumb to the depths of a 5-11 swoon.
The difficulty of their regular season schedule as well as a young and unproven defense suggests the latter.
An able offense, including a healthy Tony Romo, suggests the possibility of the former.
Then there’s the X-factor, Jerry Jones, who once again renders the 2014 version of the Cowboys an enigma. The influence of Jones on the players minus a “football guy” with final authority over all personnel historically suggests a team void of a Super Bowl mentality, able only to provide a compelling show along their path of mediocrity. Jerry has been the one constant for an unprecedented period of 18 years with no Super Bowl appearance. Unfortunately, this pattern shows no significant signs of abating soon other than the glitz and glamour of possibility occasionally flashing its mirage of hope upon the dry, dusty hearts of Cowboys fans. Their desperate thirst for winning football will probably not be alleviated by the General Manager this year.
So, get ready for the compelling drama. It’s bound to be entertaining! What more can you expect from the highest rated show on TV?
