The State of the 4-1 Dallas Cowboys?
Prior to the 2014 season, I stated that the Dallas Cowboys had the potential to be a playoff team. I also said they had the potential to go 5-11.
Why did I seem to be so wishy-washy and non-committal? There’s only one reason: Jerry Jones!
Please understand one thing. The only reason this team is 4-1 at this point in the season is Jason Garrett and his Landry-like “process” that provides an equilibrium to counter balance the rudderless meanderings of the Owner. Jerry tends to be all over the place about any given subject. And time is not a limitation for Jerry. Anytime is a good time for him to utter without a rudder. He is the ultimate X factor.
I’ve also stated before that Garrett will be successful to the extent that he can overcome his exuberant Owner and GM. How much will Jerry allow Garrett to implement his process? That is the bottom line for this team.
And until they actually accomplish something considered substantive by NFL standards, this team resides on the edge of an abyss created and maintained by Jerry Jones. This team is fragile, perhaps the most fragile 4-1 team in NFL history. But that’s Jerry, always producing history making shows.
But for now, the show remains the stability shown relying on the strengths of this team. And it’s those strengths and nothing else that have helped them to arrive at 4-1. Those strengths are the only thing that will take them to the Playoffs.
Admittedly, the Seattle Seahawks will provide the toughest test as the most complete team the Cowboys will face all season. Resolve will be tested and maybe altered. Offensive balance, though, will be deciding factor for the Cowboys. As committed as they are to the run, the passing game may have to set up the run against the talented Seattle defense. This is where the veteran status of Romo as well as the multiple talents of Bryant, Witten and Williams comes into play.
Regardless, the Cowboys must control the clock and keep Russell Wilson off the field as much as possible. If they can’t, this could be a long, cruel afternoon.
Until then, it remains to be seen what Jerry will say or do!
